Martin Cantin, one of the co-founders, was my teacher when I was 14 and he was 18. I did a lot of competitions and really liked it, so I started to teach,\u201d Giroux recalls.<\/p>\n<p>He pursued teaching at university and developed a passion for boxing, kickboxing, and martial arts. In 2001, Martin Giroux and Martin Cantin expanded the ownership group, joining forces with Marcelin Cantin and Carl Gauthier.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Karat\u00e9 Sportif grew their classes and revenue while learning to run an expanding enterprise. With dedication, Karat\u00e9 Sportif began franchising, eventually expanding to 42 locations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we have bigger goals\u2014maybe 50-100 schools. But things are moving at the right pace. Hopefully, we\u2019ll keep progressing like this,\u201d says Giroux.<\/p>\n<h2>What does Karat\u00e9 Sportif offer?<\/h2>\n<p>Karat\u00e9 Sportif teaches all ages, emphasizing mental health and stress management. They reward perseverance over athleticism and advance students through new classes, longer sessions, and different uniforms as they progress. Once known for world championships, their new approach has helped them retain more students and increase revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the beginning, we were strong in competition circuits, but we were stuck around 300 students,\u201d says Giroux. They shifted focus to support all students, not just athletes, by prioritizing personal growth over competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to make it so everybody could do it, so we shifted to self-development rather than only focusing on competitions,\u201d Giroux confirms. This change allowed them to grow their student base and revenue. Karat\u00e9 Sportif now values and rewards improvement, commitment, and perseverance, helping students develop life skills both inside and outside the dojo.<\/p>\n<h2>How Karat\u00e9 Sportif contributes to the community<\/h2>\n<p>Helping out the community is another important part of Karat\u00e9 Sportif\u2019s values. \u201cAll our programs are built around respect for ourselves, respect for others, and respect for the community,\u201d says Giroux.<\/p>\n<p>With so many locations, they can invest in new spaces and ideas, including their <a href=\"https:\/\/karatesportif.com\/en\/gks-fondation\/\">I Am The Hero of My Life Foundation<\/a>, founded in 2013, while providing the high-quality programs and equipment students need to progress. Through their foundation, Karat\u00e9 Sportif brings free classes for preschool and school-age children to various communities.<\/p>\n<p>Giroux sees his school\u2019s approach to personal development as an effective way to help children in the community build the skills they need to be their best and help others. \u201cThe black belt attitude is about going into the community, being ready to help, and being a good person. It\u2019s not about being someone who wants to fight,\u201d Giroux explains.<\/p>\n<p>In class, Karat\u00e9 Sportif also reinforces being your best in three places: school, the dojo, and home for kids, and work, the dojo, and home for adults.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe even work with a psychologist to help students with stress and managing emotions,\u201d says Giroux. Karat\u00e9 Sportif uses various workbooks so kids and parents can talk and learn about self-development. \u201cWe promote self-confidence, discipline, honesty, humility, control of emotions, open-mindedness, and gratitude,\u201d Giroux continues.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Karat\u00e9 Sportif switched to WellnessLiving<\/h2>\n<p>In their early days, Karat\u00e9 Sportif used basic contracts to manage memberships and didn\u2019t immediately need computers. Eventually, they graduated to a software solution for martial arts schools called PerfectMind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were with PerfectMind for a long time.
