The company was acquired by Mindbody in February of this year for $15.3 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>While the exact number of MindBody FitMetrix records affected isn\u2019t yet certain, none were properly secured by a password, giving easy access to hackers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>On October 5th, Bob Diachenko, Director of Cyber Risk Research at Hacken, uncovered millions of sets of FitMetrix user data that were left unprotected. None of the records were properly secured by a password, giving easy access to hackers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among 113.5 million customer records in FitMetrix\u2019s database, each record consists of a name, gender, contact information, photos, workout locations, emergency contacts, and more. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/10\/11\/fitmetrix-mindbody-data-exposed-password\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TechCrunch<\/a>, personal health information such as height, weight, shoe sizes, and more was also exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason Loomis, Chief Information Security Officer of MindBody, tried to ease the situation by stating that the accounts \u201cdid not include any login credentials, passwords, credit card information, or personal health information.\u201d Diachenko questioned MindBody\u2019s claim, citing that health information in the records was clearly visible. When asked to clarify, MindBody provided no further comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is still unclear how many people accessed the database. However, Diachenko is certain he wasn\u2019t the first who found it exposed and vulnerable. A ransom note was found in the database; it read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;ALL YOUR [INFORMATION AND DATA] HAVE BEEN BACKED UP AT OUR SERVERS, TO RESTORE SEND 0.1 BTC TO THIS BITCOIN ADDRESS 14ARsVT9vbK4uJzi78cSWh1NKyiA2fFJf3 THEN SEND AN EMAIL WITH YOUR SERVER IP, DO NOT WORRY, WE CAN NEGOCIATE IF CAN NOT PAY&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-did-mindbody-deal-with-the-security-breach\">How did Mindbody deal with the security breach? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, the hacker did not successfully delete the data from the FitMetrix servers, and thus the threat proved fruitless. Diachenko attempted several times to contact MindBody about the security breach. However, only when TechCrunch reached out, did MindBody jump into action to deal with the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cData security is of course top priority in our industry, and any invasion of that is a reminder to never stop being cautious,&#8221; says Len Fridman of competitior, WellnessLiving.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are very sad to hear about MindBody\u2019s security breach. It\u2019s a very unfortunate turn of events,\u201d said Len Fridman, Co-Founder and CEO of WellnessLiving. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellnessliving.com\/blog\/why-cybersecurity-is-crucial-for-your-wellness-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Data security is, of course, top priority in our industry<\/a>. No word yet on whether they will take action to inform their customers.
