Empowerment Protocol (6 week series)
Sep 22, 2025 - Oct 27, 2025

As we process trauma through the mind, we must process it through the body.

Whether we’ve been in a vehicle accident, lost a loved one, or anything in between, our body keeps the score. Our nervous system is wired like branches of tree. And when we experience a traumatic event, those branches get pruned.

But those branches can regrow, and that’s what we focus on with our Empowerment Protocols. By using these evidence-based techniques that have been thoroughly tested and peer reviewed, we offer self-regulation techniques that help each client process trauma through the body.

Over this 6-week series, Lindsey will be guiding you through classroom instruction to help you understand the biomechanics of trauma, educating you on how your brain and nervous system responds to various events. From there, she will guide you through movement techniques and meditative practices that help integrate the trauma helping you to calm the nervous system and move past blockages that may have been holding you back.

This is an excellent compliment to any talk therapy that someone may be engaged in, but just know that you do not have to talk about any traumatic experience or share any personal details about your life in this series. This series is designed to give you a whole new set of tools that you can plug and play in real time in your life to create the conditions for healing by linking your body to your mind.

These protocols are wildly effective and are based on the clinical research of Dr. Bessel van der Kolk (Author of The Body Keeps the Score), Dr. Richard Miller (Author of The iRest Program for Healing PTSD, and many other books and clinical research), Dr. Ida Rolf (Biochemist and founder of Structural Integration protocols now called Rolfing in her honor), Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn (Author of Full Catastrophe Living and creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School), Dr. Bruce D. Perry & Maia Szalavitz (Authors of The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog) and many other fantastic clinicians who have dedicated their lives to the research and data collection of how trauma needs to be processed through the body.

Hike With a Rolfer @ Jordan Lake
Oct 4, 2025 - Oct 4, 2025

Sanford Yoga is taking Rolfing outdoors! Join Mike, our resident Rolfer, on a hike through the woods and learn a little bit about movement and relating your body to your surroundings. This guided moving meditation will help you strengthen inner balance within your nervous system while allowing full outward expression of your most authentic self. Studies have shown that time in nature is an antidote for stress: It can lower blood pressure and stress hormone levels, reduce nervous system arousal, enhance immune system function, increase self-esteem, reduce anxiety, and improve mood. (See article on Ecopsycology here)

As we process trauma in our bodies and minds, it is also important to process how we relate to the world around us. Taking Movement Work to the outdoors allows us to expand our perceptions outward past the walls of indoor spaces while maintaining a sense of safety and curiosity to explore your body's innate healing.

Some of the concepts we will discuss will be seeing with focal vs peripheral vision and awareness, forest witnessing, and walking with varying intentions. This is a great time to pick Mike's brain about Rolfing and how our mind/body/spirit connections work.

This hike will happen rain or shine along with all the forest animals and bugs present. We will meet at Jordan Lake's New Hope Overlook Trail at 448 W. Jones Rd, New Hill NC 27562. Hike will be about 5.7 miles along the New Hope Red Route Trail and will take about 4 hours. Please dress accordingly, bring some water (preferably a Camelbak or strap so you don't;'t have to carry) and snacks and any other additional items you may need outdoors such as sunscreen or bug spray. Feel free to bring a journal to capture the essence of your experiences.
