Stop the Bleed is a free 2-hour training taught by local firefighters from AFD and paramedics from ATCEMS. This workshop includes hands-on demonstrations and training for bleeding emergencies with direct pressure, tourniquet application, and wound packing.
Stop The Bleed actively engages with communities experiencing increased violence like the LGBTQ+ communities. APD's Lesbian and Gay Officer Association (LGPOA) has also assisted providing dedicated trauma bags at businesses such as the 4th Street entertainment district including bars like Rain, Highland Lounge, and Oilcan Harry's. AFD, ATCEMS, and APD have coordinated together to put on combined classes of Stop the Bleed and APD's civilian response to active shooter events (CRASE) for various businesses including the downtown entertaining district.
The AFD/ATCEMS Stop the Bleed coalition started as a response to the Club Q Shooting in Colorado Springs in November 2022. Queer firefighters and paramedics created an idea to empower the LGBTQ+ community by putting on free training with the first class happening at The Little Gay Shop in Jan 2024. The program has grown to have put on over 20 classes for nearly 800 students including the City Council, COA facilities, the entertainment district, and other LGBTQ+ communities.
This is a free event but registration is required.
