Applying a discount at checkout

Discounts can be applied to the items purchased in your store. You can apply discounts in the following ways:

  • Apply a dollar value or percentage discount to an individual item.
  • Apply a dollar value or percentage discount to all applicable items in the shopping cart.
  • Apply a discount code to all applicable items in the shopping cart.

Staff members must be assigned to a staff role with the Manage Discount Codes permission enabled to apply discounts in the store. For more information, see Staff role permissions. You can also provide your clients with discount codes that they can apply to purchases made in the Client Web App.

When applying discounts to purchases, keep the following information in mind:

  • If you apply a discount to an individual item, the value of the discount will not be displayed next to Discount in the totals section of the shopping cart.
  • If you apply a discount code to the shopping cart, the value of the discount will not be displayed next to Discount in the totals section of the shopping cart.
  • If you manually change the dollar amount of an individual item in the shopping cart, the changes will not be displayed next to Discount in the totals section of the shopping cart.
  • If you apply a percentage discount to a membership, it will apply to all future payments of the membership. If you apply a dollar value discount to a membership, it will apply only to the first payment.
  • When configuring discount amounts, you can apply up to 100% discount.

In this article:

    To apply a discount to an individual item:

    1. Complete steps 1-6 in Making a sale.
    2. Click the Options button  next to the item you want to discount and select Edit Details. In the new field, select a discount type (percentage, or dollar), and enter the amount to be discounted.
    3. Click Proceed to Checkout.
    4. Select each payment method the client wants to use. In most cases, the total payment is split between the selected payment methods equally, but you can adjust the amounts as required. If you select Gift Cards, then you must enter the required code; the amount on the gift card will be entered automatically.
    5. Click Complete.

    To apply a discount to the entire shopping cart:

    1. Complete steps 1-6 in Making a sale.
    2. At the bottom of the shopping cart, select a discount type:
      • Click the Coupon button Coupon button. Under DISCOUNT CODE, enter or select a discount code from the list. The value of the discount will not be displayed next to Discount in the totals section of the shopping cart.
        • The option to select a discount code from a dropdown list will only be available if the Display discount codes during staff checkout option is enabled. For more information, see Store settings.
      • Click the Percent button . Under % DISCOUNT, enter a discount percentage.
      • Click the Dollar button . Under $ DISCOUNT, enter a discount value.
    3. Click the Approve button .
    4. Click Proceed to Checkout.
    5. Select each payment method the client wants to use. In most cases, the total payment is split between the selected payment methods equally, but you can adjust the amounts as required. If you select Gift Cards, then you must enter the required code; the amount on the gift card will be entered automatically.
    6. Click Complete.
