Joe Brenneman earned a Bachelor
of Music in Clarinet Performance from the Conservatory of Music at
Capital University in 2008 and has been teaching and playing in the
central ohio region since graduation. While at Capital, he expanded
on his performance focus by studying saxophone, voice, music theory
and woodwind pedagogy.
As a classically trained
musician, Joe has travelled nationally and internationally with the
Capital University Symphonic Winds and Chapel Choir. Regionally, he
has performed with the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra, the New
Albany Symphony Orchestra and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
Beyond performing existing repertoire, he has commissioned several
new works for the clarinet, including most notably a full 4
movement concerto for clarinet and wind ensemble by composer John
Larison.
Joe has also branched into the
realm of jazz and swing era music, performing the works of Artie
Shaw and Benny Goodman, as well as performing in new music
ensembles like the Aaron Quinn Nonet and the “Small Large
Ensemble”. He is a 9 year veteran of the Columbus music scene,
playing in groups like Super Desserts, the DewDroppers and
Whirlybirds. Outside of performing, he co-founded the non-profit
Tiny House Music Collective with the goal of connecting local
musicians to resources.
Teaching has been a lifelong
passion for Joe. He has been working in the field for over 10 years
professionally and has been sharing his love of music with his
peers since he was in middle school. His experience spans from
beginning lessons with students as young as 7, to preparing
students for collegiate and graduate school auditions. Whether you
want to sit in an orchestra as a professional, or just want to be
able to play duets with your grandchildren, Joe is committed to
finding the best path for you to accomplish your goals.
His teaching style is
student-centered and is focused on developing a lifelong love of
music with the idea that, if you want to play your instrument,
you’ll be your own best teacher. From mastering the technical
aspects of your instrument, to gaining a better understanding of
why music works the way it does, Joe’s big-picture approach to
music education develops a well-rounded student who can take their
education with them for the rest of their lives.
