Virtual Instructor: Vocal
Nicky is a graduate of New York Vocal Coaching's Voice Training and Teacher Certification Program under master vocal teacher Justin Stoney. She has been privileged to have been mentored by Tony and Grammy award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda and to have worked with musical theatre legend Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell). She is currently a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singers. She has studied voice at the Royal Conservatory of Toronto, trained in music through the Berklee School of Music, and is a member of the Advanced BMI musical theatre workshop where she was awarded the Jean Banks Award for Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theatre. She is the recipient of an ASCAP Plus Award and is a graduate of Ryerson University's Theatre Acting program.
Nicky approaches the voice through an advanced technical lens and considers herself a voice technician as well as a vocal coach! Her work as a composer has given her an advantage when teaching voice students. It has allowed her to dig deeper into the story telling of a song and how to convey that through the voice whether a musical theatre, jazz, pop, rock or R&B song. She loves helping students find their voice and help share it with the world! To learn more about Nicky and her work visit www.nickyphillipsvocalstudio.com and www.nickyphillips.com
Nicky believes that singing lessons should be fun, should challenge you, and should also be a time where you can feel free to explore your voice in a supportive environment. She is here to encourage you, to guide you, and to show you that if you put in the work you will see/hear incredible results. Nicky is trained in all aspects of the voice, vocal technique and vocal pedagogy. This includes Breathing, Anatomy, Laryngeal Studies, Vocal Registration, Vocal Science, Resonance, Posture and Alignment and Vocal Styles. Every singer is different and therefore her approach with each singer is different. She creates lessons with unique vocal technique exercises for each student all based on a strong foundation of universal vocal principles. The first half of the lesson covers technique and the second half of the lesson is applying that technique to a song or two.
Nicky works with advanced professionals to total beginners and students of all ages. Whether you are looking to strengthen your voice, work on your mix, expand your range, land that audition or become comfortable with singing in public, she can help you achieve your goals all while learning proper technique in a fun, healthy and nurturing environment!
