Description
We each have a story to tell and
the act of writing about our lives helps us make sense of our
experiences with loved ones, family, careers, community, personal
struggles, and most importantly, our inner emotional life. Get the
guidance and mentoring of an experienced memoir teacher (MFA in
fiction) to explore where to start and/or how to dig under the
surface into your life story as an act of creativity, self-knowing
and mining the wisdom gained from your own life experiences.
This retreat includes 2.5 days of mindfulness exercises, expressive
art, writing exercises, critique sessions, yoga and plenty of
reflecting. We will bask in the inspiration of beautiful Heartwood
Retreat Center walking the labyrinth, enjoying restorative and/or
other styles of yoga, sit in an award-winning Chakra garden to pen
thoughts, gain insight through guided meditations, and each
participant will enjoy a relaxing massage in our healing salt room
massage studio. This retreat is designed to relax the mind, body
and spirit, as we learn to dive deeper into writing our life
story.
Memoir writing is less about capturing the events of your life, and
more an act of probing the deeper recesses of one’s heart and mind
to find connections and meaning in the choices we've made and the
direction our paths have taken as life unfolds. Whether you want to
write your life story for a more poignant understanding of a
particular period of your life, to gain deeper awareness of self,
to leave reflective stories behind for future generations, or you
want to hone your craft to make your story publication-worthy,
this retreat will awaken you to the power of memoir writing from a
technical “how to” standpoint as well as process oriented
self-discovery. Writing sessions include inspirational exercises
and writing prompts to complete during the retreat and elective
critique sessions to share and get professional feedback for your
writing. Participants are invited to bring up to 5 pages of any
work written before the retreat for critique. We will send you an
e-mail with writing prompts to spur inspiration before the retreat
if you want to get started on a project before joining us.
