Qi Gong Description
An integral part of internal martial arts, the practice of Qi Gong can be distilled down to three main focuses:  Helping the body become more efficient in taking in and processing acquired Qi (food and air), helping prevent the body from using excess Original Qi (mental and physical stress management), and helping the body more efficiently circulate the acquired Qi throughout the body.  In the quest for overall body health, the Qiang Shan Qi Gong System approaches these goals by focusing on organ health.  The premise being that if the organs are healthy, then the rest of the body is as well.

To directly affect the organs, the system utilizes a joint-focused approach.  Movement of the joints affects the meridians (energy channels) that pass through the joint, affecting the organ related to that meridian. With proper joint attenuation the surrounding ligaments and tendons are strengthened as well as the supporting smaller muscles of the joint.  These controlled twisting movements also directly affect the interconnecting network of fascia throughout the body.  The movement of the fascia and the spine directly massages the organs themselves, causing increased circulation to the organs and abdominal cavity.  This is assisted even more through pelvic floor activation and efficient movement of the diaphragm.  These movements, in conjunction with proper breath and mind training, create an effective and complete system for accomplishing goals of Qi Gong practice.

Bio
I grew up in RVA and have always enjoyed sports and being outdoors.  I played soccer for 16 years, enjoyed running, and then discovered the art martial art Qiang Shan Ba Gua Zhang in 1998.  I've been an instructor of Qi Gong and martial combat at Blue Dragon Martial Arts and Bodywork since 2007.

I believe the more you move, the better you'll feel.  I enjoy the complexity of both the martial combat and health sides of the art, along with its ease of integration into everyday life.  Finding new ways to use the principles of the art to benefit my life and the lives of those around me is truly important to me and why I love teaching.

When not working, you'll find me spending time with my wife and 2 teenagers, traveling or in the great outdoors.
