An introduction to the expression and fluidity of contemporary dance technique, in a class with other beginner adults, set to an eclectic soundtrack that might include world music, jazz, blues, pop, and even hip hop.

Have you avoided trying contemporary dance because you don’t really know what it is, and you think it might be all kinds of weird movements? Or you’re worried about being the oldest person in the room?

Neither of these things will happen in our 12 week Introduction to Contemporary Dance course. Firstly, we really do have people in their 30s and beyond in our contemporary classes. And we’ll start from the basics, and support you as you start to learn the principles of contemporary dance, discover techniques to harness gravity and momentum, learn to move with more efficiency and less effort, recapture the joy of movement you had in childhood, increase the suppleness of your body, and train your body to move like a contemporayr dancer.

It’s a way for adults to learn contemporary dance that won’t make you feel self-conscious about your age, size, or lack of experience. Everyone else in the class will be in the same position as you, learning contemporary dance for the first time.

Your teacher will be a specialist in teaching contemporary dance to adults, which means you won’t be asked to do something that is harmful to your body, you won’t be expected to wear revealing clothes that make you uncomfortable, and you’ll be treated like an individual who has their own dreams, goals and aspirations.

At the end of the 12 weeks, you’ll never have to be afraid of being the only novice in a contemporary dance class again. You’ll be ready to step into one of our Level 2 contemporary classes, or you could attend an ongoing beginner contemporary dance class anywhere and hold your own.
