Description

Weaving as Meditation Workshop

Tapestry (noun): a fabric consisting of a warp upon which colored threads are woven by hand to produce a design, often pictorial, used for wall hangings, furniture coverings, etc.

Tapestry is a type of fiber weaving that differs from cloth weaving in that it is relatively quick to set up, but can take many hours to complete, depending on the size of the piece. Tapestry is a methodical and slow practice using various fibers (threads, yarn, roving), as well as weaving techniques (plain/tabby, soumak, rya knots, etc.).

Free-form weaving is an expressive, process-oriented, no-rules way to explore traditional hand weaving techniques, without fear of mistakes, to create a piece that is personal and unique. As our hands get involved with passing the weft over and under the warp threads of the loom, our mind is free to rest from conscious thought and mental chatter. It is in this state of quiet that we are best able to hear our creative voice and let it shine.

Tapestries and wall-hangings can be created on the simplest of looms. In this workshop, you will use an embroidery hoop, yarns, roving, fabric strips and weaving techniques to create a unique piece that’s ready to display. Wear comfortable clothing, as you will also practice asana and enjoy some meditation as part of our creative process. All materials for the weaving will be provided.
