The Magic of Yoga is a restorative yoga workshop focused on yoga's power to transform. Yoga practice takes us through a transformation that happens in the short-term (the time you spend on your mat) and in the long-term (the duration of your study and practice over the years). There is an old yoga joke - if it is not working after the first few goes, give it another ten years and then see if you like it. However, it is possible to reap the rewards of yoga practice in a very short time. Try for example sitting quietly and taking ten conscious breaths, or even just three. You will notice the difference afterwards in your mood, ability to focus and your sense of presence.
In this workshop, we will be doing postures specifically intended to release anxiety and stress and help you to feel grounded, calm and centred. The session will begin with a body scan meditation to increase body awareness and take you out of the chattering mind, and we will end with a Yoga Nidra practice which is a long guided relaxation that can help to reset unhepful thought patterns and habits.
Restorative yoga is a slow, meditative style of physical movement, which helps to release stress and bring about ease in body and mind. The gentle, supported postures are held for up to 10 minutes with a focus on comfort and the subtle release of muscular knots and tight spots. All of the props are provided, and we will be using bolsters, blankets, blocks and belts to ensure that the body is supported enough to completely relax and let go. The stress of daily life accumulates in the body in the form of holding patterns and chronic tension. When you encourage the body to release its held tension, stress begins to dissolve from the mind.
