A member of the Apiaceae family, Bupleurum chinense, as its taxa (Bupleurum chinense) suggests, is obtained from a plant native to China. A perennial ornamental with umbels of small, yellow flowers and sickle-shaped leaves, Bupleurum has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for millennia. Referred to as chai hu (“kindling of the barbarians”) in TCM, it is employed for its beneficial properties and in moving qi (energy/life force) throughout the system. Bupleurum root can be used in decoctions and extracts.
