The experience of anxiety is becoming common in modern society, as are clinically significant anxiety disorders. Although the conventional treatment for anxiety is often prescription pharmaceuticals, there are well-known behavioral practices that are effective in improving anxiety and in treating anxiety disorders. Furthermore, there is growing research evidence that contemplative practices such as meditation and yoga may be effective coping strategies for anxiety.
This workshop will describe the biomedical characteristics of anxiety, anxiety disorders, the known behavioral and treatments, the scientific rationale tor mind- body practices such as yoga, and the research evidence for the efficacy of yoga for improving anxiety in general and as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder.
