Chronic stress is highly prevalent in modern society, and is especially important in critical occupations such as healthcare providers where it can lead to burnout.  However, our educational and medical systems are not effectively addressing this burden which has very serious consequences for physical and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression and quality of life.  

This lecture will begin by defining stress and providing an understanding of the physiology and psychology of chronic stress, stress management, resilience, and burnout. The role of behavioral practices in mind-body medicine that include physical exercise and relaxation, breathing techniques and control of attention interventions will be discussed in detail from the perspective of the physiological and psychological mechanisms involved, including a review of the published research on the efficacy of these practices for stress and burnout.
