Kirtan with Kalidasa and Friends
Kirtan is the ecstatic and meditative singing of the divine names from the Hindu tradition. It's a simple yet powerful way to connect with self, source, and community. All are welcome to this spiritual practice of call and response singing of mantras with traditional and contemporary melodies. Participants are invited to sit comfortably, to sing as though no one is listening, clap their hands, and dance, do yoga or move if they wish.
Kalidasa Joseph Getter leads kirtan with his voice, harmonium, bamboo flutes and hand drums. He is a creative world musician, composer and teacher, with decades of experience in kirtan, Javanese gamelan of Indonesia, Carnatic classical music of southern India, experimental music, drumming, Jazz, and music for yoga, theater, dance, sound healing, and the circus arts. Recently he co-created with Marcella Trowbridge a recording of music and poetry to ease the end of life, “RELEASE. FORGIVE. A Soundscape for Dying” (available on Soundcloud and YouTube).
Kaveri Dasi provides support on the mridanga (a traditional clay-bodied drum of India) and also as vocalist. She is a Vaishnava and member of the Bhakta Bhandav organization.
