Afro-Cuban Dance Intensive Bootcamp with Kenny
Once class a week
4 weeks Yambu
4 weeks Guaguanco
4 weeks Columbia
4 weeks Salsa con Rumba
Week 1: Introduction to the music and genre in Rumba, introduction
to the clave and
introduction to the basic steps and body mechanics.
Weeks 2: Developing understanding of the Yambu music and history,
putting basic sequences
together.
Week 3: Building on the sequences built in week 2.
Week 4: Solidifying the basics and developing variations,
introducing improvisation in the
rumba context, and giving a sample of Guaguanco.
Week 5: Introduction to Guaganco music, history, and basic steps,
using Yambu foundation.
Weeks 6: Focus on Guaguanco basics, gender role and building
variations.
Weeks 7: Separating men and women to focus on technique and
attitude while dancing
Guaguanco.
Week 8: Introducing Guaguanco circle and improvisation, reviewing
all the basics and variation
since week 1, to solidify the learning process, giving a sample of
Columbia.
Week 9: Introduction to Columbia music and history, introducing
basic steps and building from
Guaguanco foundation.
Week 10: Working on basic steps and how to improvise in
Columbia.
Week 11: Introducing intricate steps and solo improvisation.
Week 12: Review of all the steps and introduction to Columbia
challenge.
Week 13: Introduction of timba, songo and introduction to the mix
of salsa and rumba with basic
steps.
Week 14: Review of all the rumba steps, break down on how to place
them in salsa and with
different claves.
Week 15: Building variations of salsa con rumba, working slow,
medium, and fast speed.
Review of all the material since week 1.
Week 16: Salsa na ma format, focusing on improvisation,
interpretation of the music.
Building confidence on the dance, possibility to have live
drumming.
All classes will have a warm up, basic drills, movement break down,
music and history
explanation, Sequences and variations.
Students should bring a bottle of water and a small towel.
For the women long flowy dresses.
For the men a pagnelo.
