In this 90 minute course students will be introduced to the basics of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) dagger and wrestling basics. What is this you ask? Well there is definitely a lot of stabbing and yelling “This is fun!”. So if that in any way appeals to you or you’re the type of person who might enjoy tackling your friends to the ground to show love, this workshop is for you! This engaging class is taught by Anthony Buonomo, the founder of Austin Historical Weapons Guild, Austin’s premier HEMA school located in North Austin. He has been studying HEMA since 2014, but pulls heavily on his other training in mixed martial arts, Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Judo, and Aikido to help inform his unique approach to teaching HEMA which combines the footwork of traditional martial arts with historical techniques. HEMA has been growing in popularity and you might even have seen him in a few of the Modern Rogue videos floating around the internet where he teaches various kinds of swordplay. Anthony’s passionate and enthusiastic teaching style underscores his mission statement that students be instructed safely, with good technique, and with a joy for fighting your friends. There is no experience necessary for this workshop though if you are already a HEMA student, you will still find value in exploring the basics.

The class will cover proper stance, stabbing techniques, disarming, parrying, and light grappling. By the end of the 90 minutes, participants can expect to walk with a new swagger that comes from the confidence of knowing how to handle a dagger and practice a short sequence of attacks with parries. Students should wear comfortable work out clothing and bring a water bottle, but all other equipment will be provided.

Come join us for what’s basically swing dancing with knives and just as much fun as it sounds!
