In Sanskrit pranayama translates literally to “extending or expanding prana.” Prana is our life force or strength or energy (think of chi in Chinese medicine) and it can quickly float, be blocked or leak out through the body. Pranayama are breathing techniques that help improve body relaxation and prana flow. Classically, pranayama is performed in meditation and asana, but it can also be practiced as stand-alone exercise. Such special courses are your chance for students with an accomplished pranayama practice to pose questions and try out more advanced techniques with the guidance of a yoga instructor.
