Mandala is a Sanskrit word that translates to circle. The circle signifies wholeness, without beginning and end. The mandala is a symmetrical design that has appeared in architecture, rituals and art forms around the world throughout history. These circular designs have repeating colors, shapes, and patterns radiating from the center. A mandala can be a tangible expression of an emotion, thought or aspiration, a form of meditation, or simply an intuitive, creative exercise. It can be precise, carefully measured, geometric, and perfectly symmetrical, or in contrast, free flowing, organic, and asymmetrical.
In this workshop participants will learn a bit about the history, types and uses of mandalas and then do some mindful breathing, movement and yoga postures to bring you inward to help prepare the body and mind for the experience of creating your own personal mandala. Ellen will guide you through meditative practices while you’re working on your mandala as well as a meditation you can do with your completed mandala.
Don’t worry! No yoga or artistic talent is necessary. Just a willingness to explore and create. Everyone will receive several preprinted mandalas to choose from to color.
Art materials and pre-printed mandalas will be available for the in-person class or you may also opt to bring your own colored pencils or markers if you prefer.
