Through discussion, demonstration, and practice, students will learn to safely teach advanced asana (including inverted, back bending, and arm balancing postures). Instruction will include how to assess student readiness, how to safely sequence for each posture, how to (and whether to!) provide hands-on assistance in a safe manner, particularly for this type of posture which is so readily subject to causing student injury.
Review of major joints, joint classification, and muscle groups. Discussion of the major injuries and issues we encounter, possible causes of those injuries/issues, postures contraindicated for those injuries, and how to offer modified postures for injured students within the context of a group vinyasa class without having to disrupt the flow of the class for the student. We will also learn to offer postures commonly indicated to help particular conditions, as well as creating a foundational understanding that yoga instructors are not physicians and should never indicate to students that they have a level of knowledge that they do not.
