<div>T’ai chi ch’uan (known familiarly as “t’ai chi”) is a Chinese Taoist system of gentle internal exercise. Originally devised as a superior form of self-defense based on principles of yielding and softness, it has come to be practiced today for many other benefits that derive from the same principles.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>This is a 4-week event series available to students who have attended a prior T'ai Chi class at Taproot. If you would like to attend a T'ai Chi class, please email <a href="mailto:taproot.desk@gmail.com">taproot.desk@gmail.com</a> and we will let you know when we have an introductory class available.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>With regular practice, students may achieve:</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Improved health, circulation, vitality, and stamina</div>
<div>Profound relaxation, finely tuned balance, and enhanced coordination</div>
<div>Sharpened attention and concentration</div>
<div>A sense of one’s own center and root</div>
<div>Cultivation of one’s own ch’i, the vital force underlying all physiological processes—including longevity—and linking the body, mind, and spirit</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The sequence of movements comprising a t’ai chi “form” is performed slowly and fluidly and can be practiced with benefit by anyone who can walk, regardless of age or state of health.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Many t’ai chi styles, individual forms, and variants have developed over the centuries. The style to be demonstrated at Taproot is known as Yang-style Short Form, distilled from a much longer sequence of movements by the renowned grandmaster Cheng Man-Ch’ing. For those with limited time to exercise, Prof. Cheng’s short form permits the regularity of practice essential for obtaining the benefits of t’ai chi ch’uan.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Peter is an acupuncturist and Oriental medicine practitioner who has been practicing the Yang-style short form his entire adult life, and teaching it since 1977. He studied in New York for nearly a decade with the late American master Lou Kleinsmith, Prof. Cheng’s senior American student.</div>
