Groove 101: Intro to Hip Hop (6 wks)

Hip Hop dance includes a wide range of street dance styles born in New York City in the late 60s and early 70s. Hip Hop dance styles parallel the evolution of Hip Hop music and culture which grew primarily in New York and California. Hip Hop is often used as an umbrella term which encompasses a variety of distinct dance styles including Breakdance, Popping, Locking and Krump.

Improve your coordination, build confidence and get a great workout with Hip Hop. This class is designed for those with very little, or absolutely no experience in Hip Hop dance. . Along with the great dance moves comes the great music. From classic, to old school to recent hits, this class will keep you moving and grooving and keeping in touch with Hip Hop culture.

This is an introductory level for Absolute Beginners. Adults will enjoy learning Tap terminology, technique, and steps over this progressive session. Develop confidence, mental concentration, physical coordination and musicality. This registered course is for students who are new to Tap, students who want to dance, but never had the opportunity, and for those who have danced before and want to begin again.

This class:

  • Introduces you to basic steps like flaps, taps, time steps, cramp rolls and more
  • Includes a warm up that focuses on technique
  • Includes progressions across the floor with choreography and improv
  • Trains the body and the ear to move to different rhythms
  • Strengthens timing, speed and coordination
