Forming and Forging

Forming and forging are the techniques used in moving metal into specific shapes or forms. In this two day workshop, students will learn how to create leaves and floral forms through hammering techniques. Students learn how to forge a taper and create and complete a spiral. Flush Setting

Learn how to take your stone setting skills to the next level with Donnie Jarvis in this one day, Technique Series - Flush Setting Workshop. Students will learn the proper skills necessary to successfully set faceted stones flush with the metal surface. This class will focus on technique only, and will provide ample time to practice flush setting during class. Students will start out on a flat surface and will end the day setting stones in a round brass ring. Materials are included.

Spend a full weekend learning the core techniques of jewelry making and the tools and equipment of a metalsmithing studio. You will receive a thorough introduction to sawing and soldering while you design 2 very important facets of the jewelry world: rings and pendants in copper, brass, or sterling silver (silver available for purchase).

This course will cover...

Sawing: The jeweler's saw is one of the most important tools found on every jeweler’s bench. It is the tool that really takes your jewelry to the next level and show off quality craftsmanship. You can create your own intricate shapes and piercings unique to your designs rather than relying on the sheer, snips, or pre-made shapes in sheet metal. This skill is not difficult, however, to really master sawing and piercing it takes practice!

  • Practice sawing and piercing with templates that include organic and geometric shapes/lines
  • How to lay out your design and prep the metal for sawing
  • Using the flex shaft and drilling
  • Understanding saw blade sizes and specifications best fit for different tasks
  • The importance of proper blade tension and how to achieve it
  • Sawing safety and comfort:How to hold the saw and proper posture for best results for you and your jewelry
  • Filing and sanding to finish out your pieces

Soldering: Knowing how to solder can take your designs to the next level and open up a whole new world. We will teach you one of the most fundamental skills in jewelry making.

Taste of Argentium

This class teaches the basics of fusing Argentium Silver. Argentium is a high karat sterling silver alloy that has many advantages over traditional sterling silver including purity, colour, and hardness. Most of all, it can cut your production time down tremendously because of its ability to fuse, easier clean up when fabricating, fire stain resistant, and it is tarnish resistant and hypoallergenic.

 

In class you will practice first hand from a certified Argentium Silver Instructor how to:

  • Fuse wire to sheet / sheet to sheet

  • Create and design simple jewelry pieces for practice and troubleshooting with the instructor

Step Bezels

In this class you will learn how to create a double wall bezel with an open back which literally adds a “step” to help support your stone. There are several advantages to this backless bezel setting including less material, which cuts down on the cost of materials and the weight of the piece.

You will learn and practice:

  • Create a ring with a step bezel for a round or oval faceted stone (8mm x 6mm minimum) in sterling silver

Feeling stumped in your design process? Find your voice and zoom into a collection of work that compliments or goes beyond your usual aesthetic. Feel like you can’t draw, not to worry. This is not about sketching or drawing, it is about tricks and tips to design your work and map out your approach to fabrication using a 3 dimensional approach.

 

In this class you will develop a design or collection starting with a simple geometric shape, and with the help of exercises work through new and intriguing forms in paper. Learn key words to trigger your design process and talk about abstract expression you want to put into your design (Contrast, surprise, serenity,...)

 

You will transform your ideas from paper to metal using the metalsmithing skills you know, plus learn some tips and tricks to effectively convey your design and add more volume to pieces through textures, forming, sawing and rolling mill. Ultimately you will begin or complete a captivating piece to jump start a new collection.

Basket Settings for Faceted Stones

In this two day course students will explore the art of properly measuring, soldering and setting a hand-made basket mount for a faceted stone. Students may make any type of jewelry (i.e. earrings, ring,pendant) within the duration of this workshop-with the focus that at least one project will be completed to a high finish.


Students are encouraged to bring in a range of larger sized faceted stones. These can be round, oval, square, triangular- any shape. The goal is to work in larger style stones (esp. if this is your first time creating something like this). Anything 8mm and over is best to learn on, and odd shapes are encouraged!
