Do3 Open Water Skills Training
The aim of this course is to make you more effective and efficient in the water. It is only suitable for those who swim front crawl - it is not a session for improvers.
 
This course will be around 60mins and will cover:
 
Sighting
The importance of good sighting technique
How to swim effectively to be able to sight (crocodile eyes)
How to swim in a straight line
What to sight on & how often to check
 
Different stroke techniques 
Introduction of a straighter arm stroke to adapt to different water conditions…… when & why
 
Turning round a buoy
Techniques: swim turn & corkscrew + when to use each
 
Drafting
Introduction to why we do it
Different methods of drafting .. feet, by side & arrow… which is best for you?
 
Bilateral breathing 
Especially important in open water (seeing what is going on on both sides + side/hip drafting
The need to breath to your draft swimmer side
 

The session is coached by a qualified open water instructor. The session has fully safety cover with safety spotters, lifeguard and rescue kayaks.

This session is designed for those new to open water or those looking to boost their confidence. This short session covers the fundamentals that will leave you feeling more relaxed and confident in the water. Elements included are:

  • Discussion and introduction to the swim set up at Compton Verney
  • Preparation/warm up
  • The importance of relaxed breathing
  • Entering the water safely
  • Breathing technique in the water
  • Floating for safety
  • Submerging your head (if you want to)
  • Breathing out under the water
  • Short swims

The session lasts around 60 minutes and is coached by a qualified open water instructor. The session has fully safety cover with safety spotters, lifeguard and rescue kayak.

Improve your front crawl
Jun 10, 2026 - Jul 8, 2026

This course is for those who can swim a bit of front crawl, but who would like to improve their technique. There will be 5 practical pool sessions and an online course with video demonstrations and things to practise in between.

We will fully break down the elements of the front crawl stroke and use drills to help you to refine your technique. We will work with the way YOU move, rather than teaching everyone a one size fits all stroke, and give everyone individual feedback on which aspect(s) of their stroke to focus their efforts on.

Aimed at those that can comfortably swim at least two lengths of front crawl continuously.

Please note the first session starts 15 minutes earlier, meeting in the reception area of the leisure centre. Subsequent sessions start on poolside.
