Yoga Retreat to Mexico w/ Justicia

Mornings will begin with an upbeat, all-levels yoga practice, followed by breakfast at the Lodge. Your days are yours to spend as you wish: hanging at the local beach, hiking, kayaking, sailing, taking a day tour, receiving a massage or spa treatment, or simply reclining at the Xinalani pool. Justicia traveled to Puerto Vallarta and hand-picked this lodge; it is a true gem, in one of the most gorgeous and pristine spots of the Pacific Coast of Mexico!

Our days will wind down with an evening yoga practice, followed by dinner together where we can share our day’s adventures in paradise! All you need to do is secure your own international air travel (flight to Puerto Vallarta, PVR) and put your deposit down (a nonrefundable $500 will hold your space). Book with a yoga buddy and you can room together!

The retreat is an open levels yoga experience suitable for experienced practitioners and beginners alike. Variations will be offered for all, and you may do as much or as little yoga as you like.

Come learn how to work with the energetic swelling that springtime brings, according to the wisdom of Acupuncture’s Five Element Theory and Chinese Medicine. This class features a guided meditation, a discussion about the energetic qualities and gifts of spring, and a 75-90 minute yoga practice to help you attune to the energy of springtime.

Let’s discuss how to make and hold spaces that are more affirming for yogis with different experiences of embodiment: how to make yoga meaningful, fun, and accessible to most students!

We will engage in conversation around:

-Our understanding of what ‘trauma’ is, helping, fixing vs. serving, and defining other key terms in context.
-Cultivating awareness of how trauma affects you and your students and apply that lens to your practice and teaching
-Evidence backing the benefits of trauma-informed yoga
-Nervous system and neuroscience basics
-Building resistance with co-regulation skills
-How to set up a trauma-sensitive yoga classroom in studio and non-studio spaces
-How to structure and lead a trauma-sensitive class that is inclusive to people with varying levels of experience and ability
-Safe, sustainable, and accessible transitions
-Best practices for asana, pranayama, meditation, language + cueing
-The development of and cultural awareness + humility within yoga teaching
-What yoga service means and represents
-The importance of self-care, self-reflection + cultural humility as a yoga teacher and in yoga service work

This weekend training will include a few sample trauma-aware classes including asana (movement), pranayama (breath work), and guided meditations and facilitated discussions after each class. Students and teachers will leave with plenty of tools and skills for how to structure and lead trauma-sensitive yoga classes as well as a manual complete with best practices, notes, suggested readings + journaling prompts to keep them connected to their inner teacher for before, during, and after teaching.

One session of Yoga Nidra can relax the inner tensions of both body and mind, and be as restful as four hours of conventional sleep. Together we will travel into a state of restful bliss – like a deep sleep with a sense of awareness. You will return to your daily life relaxed, restored, and free of tension. The Maha Yoga Teacher Training is a thorough, effective program designed to deepen your yoga practice and deliver the key skills needed to lead outstanding yoga classes. The best yoga classes integrate fun, movement and alignment within the larger context of yoga’s rich history.

Throughout the course of this training, you are guaranteed to first transform your own yoga practice and up-level your personal health in the 65-hour Yoga Immersion (updated this year to include a full weekend of philosophy with Dr. Douglas Brooks), and then develop practical techniques to share your authentic wisdom with others in meaningful yoga classes.

This course covers

-Thorough, in-depth asana practice of all categories of yoga poses, including standing postures, balancing poses, arm balances, inversions, backbends, twists, seated poses, hip openers and forward bends.
-Learn to adapt and modify these poses for different bodies, and expect to thoroughly deepen and polish your own practice.
-Principles of alignment, anatomy, and kinesiology, and their relevant application to all types of poses.
-How to develop a strong home practice, which is the most potent way to keep your teaching fresh and inspired.
-Skillful sequencing strategies for beginner, open levels, and intermediate/advanced groups. Includes a template for 60, 75 and 90-minute classes.

The Maha Yoga 300 hour advanced yoga teacher training is specifically designed to elevate the teaching skills of yoga teachers with any RYT-200 certification within a strong community. Intermediate/ Advanced Yoga Retreat @ The Himalayan Institute

Registration is fully inclusive for four days and three nights at The Himalayan Institute in Hornsdale, PA (about a 3 hour, 45 minute drive from Philly). The weekend includes six extended practice sessions, three meals a day, and ample free time to hike, read, connect with friends, or simply relax!

During this retreat, we’ll explore the full range of asana together, moving through the sequences in a supportive, fun way as a community. Each of the retreat’s extended asana sessions will move towards challenging poses with reverence and expert instruction from Justicia, and a conversation shared among all. Expect strong practice and deep laughter.

Students are recommended to be able to push up to urdhva dhanurasana (full wheel) with straight arms, balance headstand in the middle of the room and be able to kick up to handstand at the wall unassisted. This retreat is not intended for anyone with active injuries or illness. If you don’t meet the prerequisites, but you know how to honor your boundaries, please come (for example, you need the wall for headstand). If you’re simply intimidated, please check in! This weekend will be accessible to all experienced yogis who know how to back off and play their edges with deep respect.

Pricing: $695 for shared accommodations (2 people per room, shared bath in hall). Single rooms, private baths available for an extra fee as space permits; ask early for availability! Because rooms are booked upon registration at the Himalayan Institute, tuition is non-refundable. If you need to cancel, transferring your registration to another student is an option.
