Eyes Free Yoga with Diana McCown
Jan 5, 2020 - Dec 6, 2020

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart. -Helen Keller

Eyes Free Yoga is inspired by blind/visually impaired yogis and is a class where we will move mindfully and with intent, using all the senses less sight. We will focus on how we move and tap into how we feel this movement in our bodies. Through this process we will explore how we make connections without visual feedback, both on and off the mat. This class is open to all yogis, regardless of amount of sight, however, fully sighted yogis will be asked to wear a blindfold during class.

Class is by-donation.

Couples Thai Massage Workshop
May 30, 2020 - May 30, 2020

Thai massage is all about family and community, and we are all about Thai Massage! Thai Massage was developed by the people of Thailand; it started out as a way to help other family members relax and recover after a long day of hard work. Often, the children would work on their parents, easing sore muscles and stretching them out. How great is that? So bring a partner, and lets have some fun!

In this class, we're going to teach you a few of the basics. You will learn a little background on Thai Massage. You will learn how to perform some basic Thai Massage moves; and you will learn how to administer a few fun, easy stretches. All you will need is some comfy clothing, a padded surface (comforter placed on carpet, for example), a large-enough open space in your home (about 6'x 8'), and an internet connection. We will be sending out some general information, along with instructions for set-up, at least 48 hours prior. Please take 10-15 minutes to review this information with your participating family member/partner before class.

Baby Massage with Maria Sakaria
Jun 6, 2020 - Jun 6, 2020

Join us for a 60-minute Baby Massage workshop with your little one! Studies have shown that infant massage strengthens the immune system, stimulates digestion, improves quality of sleep by soothing the nervous system, reduces muscle tension, relieves gas and colic, and so much more. Most importantly, the loving touch provided through infant massage strengthens the physical and emotional connection between you and your baby. Making baby massage a part of your routine with your little one has proven to enhance bonding and relationships through close physical and emotional connection! Studies show that the more tactile stimulation a baby receives in his or her first months of life up through the first year can positively impact their brain development.

The baby massage class is meant for you and your baby, 6 weeks to 8 months, and is also open to grandparents and caretakers.

In this class you will:
– Learn how to give your baby a massage
– Learn specific massage techniques before nap time to encourage sleep
– Learn strategic ways to relieve gas, constipation, colic, and stress
– Learn how to enhance brain development, emotional and physical health for your baby
– Get one-on-one bonding time with your baby

Please have an extra blanket for baby, a clean towel (small or medium) and be prepared to take onsies and diapers off for the full skin to skin touch and massage.

Usui Reiki Level 1 Training
Jul 11, 2020 - Jul 11, 2020
Become a Certified Level 1 Reiki Practitioner!

Reiki is a healing modality rediscovered in Japan nearly 100 years ago. Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. Reiki Practitioners understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in themselves and help others!

It is believed that a person's ki or energy should be strong and free flowing. When this is true a person's body and mind is in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance. Reiki re-sets the client's natural healing process. Clients often report feeling balanced, relaxed and energized after Reiki sessions.

Participants will
• Learn the history of Reiki
• Understand the basics of the human energy field, including chakras
• Receive four Level 1 attunements
• Discover the importance of creating sacred space
• Develop the ability to focus intention
• Practice basic Reiki procedures on individuals and groups
• Learn important self care techniques
• Receive a Reiki Level 1 practitioner certificate

Use this modality for you your family or professionally. Widely accepted in Hospitals, Massage Centers, Doctors offices for patients you can use your certification in many professional settings!

Tom Capshew Ph.D. has taught Reiki at East West Living and Atmananda Yoga in New York City and has taught Reiki and other energy work at Windemere Institute of Healing Arts in the Midwest. He practices, teaches and writes about spiritual healing and is the author of the book, “Divine Warrior Training: Manifesting the Divine in our World,” available from Innerspark Press. Spring Expansion Workshop: Yoga, Qi Gong, and Meditation with James Foulkes
Jul 11, 2020 - Jul 11, 2020

As the days become warmer and brighter, nature rouses from her winter slumber and looks ahead to the new growth of Spring. This is the season to plant seeds for a future harvest and determine our direction and action for the coming expansive months. Focused intent enhances our ability to envision possibilities and weave our dreams.

Spring is the most potent season for cleansing and detoxification and is associated with the Wood Element in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In this workshop we will focus on rejuvenating and invigorating the Organs and Meridians of the Wood Element—the Liver and Gallbladder. Thus we will transform their negative emotional characteristics, moving from Anger and Frustration to Acceptance and Kindness.

The Wood energy of Spring is an expression of life and growth at its strongest. To balance the Yin nature of the gentle cleansing stretches and breathwork, we will explore a variety of dynamic sequences—expansive and opening movements with a vigorous and stimulating approach; embodying a surge of rising energy like the dandelion whose growing edge can burst through concrete if it must.

These seasonal workshops offer an opportunity to harmonise your body/mind with the cyclic rhythm of the seasons. Everyone welcome. In Silver Spring.

Yoga Therapy for Emotional Healing with Gary Kraftsow
Aug 14, 2020 - Aug 16, 2020

In this workshop, Gary Kraftsow will present the Yoga Therapy perspective and methods for working with anxiety and depression. We'll focus on psychological aspects of the human system, explore models of the integrated personality that emerge from Vedic teachings, and discover the science of meditation that the ancients developed for reducing suffering and cultivating our higher human potential.

Emotional health is fundamental to the maintenance of OVERALL health. The ancients understood emotion as the complex interaction between our mood (feeling uneasy or overwhelmed), our cognitive processes (worry or obsession), our behavior (addiction or compulsion), and our physiological responses (sleeplessness or digestive distress). As a result, they developed practices to reduce troubling emotional states and cultivate positive ones.

We'll explore the interaction of these four aspects of emotion and the practices used to transform states of anxiety and depression. Recognizing the direct influence of thought and emotion on biochemistry and knowing that positive states have a deeply restorative impact on the entire system, we are able to develop certain practices to transform negative qualities of mind, promote general well-being, and manage the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Gary will present Yoga Therapy methods for working with negative emotions, including leading an integrated practice that provides an example of how to transform states of anxiety and depression and promote a deeply restorative impact on the entire system.

Rest for All: Restorative Yoga Teacher Training with Tara Lemerise
Aug 29, 2020 - Aug 30, 2020

Some of our students' deepest experiences of yoga happen when we can give them the opportunity to stop working to control their body and mind and instead help them rest with support, awareness, and intention. The deep, purposeful kind of resting possible with restorative yoga can eliminate fatigue, expedite recovery from injuries, ease experiences of anxiety, and develop resistance to the impact of stress on physical and mental health, among other things. This teacher training will provide the tools you need to teach restorative poses with confidence and ease, both in a group setting and to one-on-one clients.

You will learn:

- detailed alignment and propping instruction of at least seven restorative postures
- the benefits, applications, and energetics of restorative yoga asanas
- when and how to use props to initiate a relaxation response
- how to address injuries, limitations, and special conditions during restorative practice
- ways to identify physical and energetic misalignment in restorative poses
- skills for physical and verbal adjustments during restorative practice
This training is ideal for:

- new and experienced yoga teachers who want to expand their teaching skills
- anyone currently enrolled in an immersion or yoga teaching training program
- anyone interested in deepening their understanding and experience of restorative yoga

This training is eligible for 12 hours of continuing education credits with Yoga Alliance and, after completion, there are opportunities to join Tara's apprenticing program.

Every body has lessons to teach. Every being in a human body has the ability to practice yoga asana and to use this beautiful set of tools to access the innate wisdom already inside of them. Whether your practice consists of handstands and arm balances or is done completely from a bed or a chair, the effects of mindful movement are profound. Every single person, regardless physical appearance or ability, is deserving of a yoga practice that meets them where they are.

This introductory training is for yoga teachers who are committed to meeting each student where they are, adapting asana practices for every body size, shape, and ability. We'll cover basic best practices and pose variations for students in larger bodies, students with limited mobility due to age or injury, and students with disabilities. It is not meant to be comprehensive but will provide a solid foundation in adaptive and inclusive teaching, sparking the creative teacher within you and honing your critical thinking skills so you're better able to innovate in real time and offer an asana practice that serves everyone who enters your classroom. Move Your Practice Forward: Make the Leap from Fundamentals to Intermediate + Beyond with Jason Crandell
Oct 9, 2020 - Oct 9, 2020

Whether you’ve been practicing for a few months or many years, these workshops will help you break through the fundamentals and develop an intermediate and beyond practice. Internationally respected for his straightforward and accessible teaching, Jason’s method will improve your arm balances, inversions, backbends, transitions, and more by breaking these postures down into progressive steps that everyone can do.

These weekend workshops will advance your practice by addressing the most common challenges that students face in every posture group—and teaching you how to move into the next phase of your practice. These workshops are equally valuable for teachers who want to learn how to help their students continue to make progress in their practice.

The Space Between: Creative Transitions
Friday, October 9th, 6–9p

Vinyasa yoga is rooted in dynamic, transitional movements that incorporate posture and breath. This workshop will freshen up your practice by exploring creative sun salutations, standing pose transitions, and arm-balance combinations. Once you’ve refined the fundamental transitions in sun salutations—including how to jump back and jump forward with greater levity and skill—you’ll make the following progress:

- Develop new, creative transitions in your salutations that strengthen your spine and shoulders.

- Learn standing pose and standing balance combinations that build confidence and advance your practice.

- Begin incorporating arm-balances and inversions into your salutations and standing posture combinations. Newer students will learn all of the necessary steps.

- Deepen you backbends, twists, and forward bends by focusing on the transitions into these postures.

- Start combining basic arm-balancing postures.

Air Time: Handstand + Forearm Balance + Headstand Variations
Saturday, October 10th, 1–4p

Learning handstand, forearm balance, and headstand takes time—even more when you want to bring these postures into the middle of the room and include variations. Once you’ve warmed up and refined the basics, you’ll make the following progress:

- Learn to transition more confidently and gracefully into handstand, forearm balance, and headstand. You’ll go up with one leg, two legs, and lay the foundation for “pressing” into these poses.

- Work on “timed” versions of these postures to develop greater strength, focus, and orientation while upside down.

- Just in case things get ugly, you’ll learn how to safely fall out of these poses without hurting yourself or impaling your neighbor.

- Explore a classic progression of headstand variations that will compliment your handstands + forearm balance practice.

Still stuck or scared? You’ll build strength and confidence for these postures with a step-by-step approach that you can do on your own at the wall!

The Best Arm Balances You’ve Ever Done
Saturday, October 10th, 5–8p

Many students struggle with arm balances because they simply haven’t learned the necessary techniques. Breaking these postures down into logical, progressive steps that everyone can do is the key to making progress in these poses. Once you’ve warmed up with core-strengthening postures, hip-opening, and a bit of vinyasa flow, you’ll make the following progress:

- Learn how to practice the entire crow/crane family, including one-legged and twisting variations. Lay the foundations for jumping into these postures from down dog and transitioning into them from handstand. You don't have to be able to do this right away, but it’s time to take a step in this direction.

- Learn the entire side-plank family, including how to transition directly from these postures into standing poses.

- Develop the steps for twisting arm balances like astavakrasana and eka pada koundinyasana.

- Learn how to prepare your hips for grasshopper, tittibhasana, and visvamitrasana.

- Begin combining multiple arm-balances.

Think you’re not ready for these? Don’t worry, there are reasonable options for everything we do.

Demystifying Lotus + Splits
Sunday, October 11th, 1–4p

This workshops is for everyone that finds lotus and splits elusive but wants to make progress in these key postures. You’ll unwind tension in your hamstrings, outer-hips, quadriceps, and hip-flexors in a wide range of postures. You’ll explore the fundamentals of hip-opening before making the following progress:

- Learn the most common causes of restriction in your hips and how to work more effectively with these joints.

- Learn the secret to keeping your knees safely aligned in lotus.

- Deepen your standing split variations and standing lotus pose variations.

- Explore several different seated split variations and seated ½ lotus variations.

- Experiment with inverted split and lotus postures.

Think your not flexible enough? There’s no pressure and it’s not a contest. This is just an opportunity to experiment and explore.

Move Your Practice Forward: Make the Leap from Fundamentals to Intermediate + Beyond with Jason Crandell
Oct 10, 2020 - Oct 10, 2020

Accessible Yoga Training with Melanie Camellia
Nov 20, 2020 - Nov 22, 2020

Join the Accessible Yoga Movement!

Accessible Yoga is an international advocacy organization focusing on sharing yoga with all. The Accessible Yoga Training focuses on how to make the yoga teachings available to everyone, regardless of their level of physical ability. We'll focus on creating integrated Accessible Yoga classes where all students can practice together. We’ll explore the many ways that yoga practice can be variated to suit students with disabilities and physical challenges as well as seniors.

We'll consider how to make our classes welcoming to everyone, and to approach students in a trauma-informed way. You'll learn sample Accessible Yoga classes, chair yoga classes, and even bed yoga classes. We'll also look at ways of bringing the yoga teachings and meditation into your classes, and how all of yoga can be used to support health and healing for every body. We'll review some common medical conditions so that you have a basic understanding of these issues.

This course includes 9 additional hours of required pre-course homework that is to be completed before the start of the course. Graduates of the program become Accessible Yoga Ambassadors and connect with a network of Accessible Yoga teachers and students around the world. Participants who have completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training will receive 30 Yoga Alliance CE hours.

Limited scholarships are available; apply here. Application deadline for scholarships is September 1, 2020.
