This workshop dives into the world of the Yoga Sūtras, an
invaluable sacred text of the Yoga
tradition. We’ll begin by discussing the text’s history, context,
and mythology. Then we’ll break
down some of the most important Sūtras, translating Sanskrit terms
in a way that’s easy to
understand. We’ll contemplate these Sūtras individually and as part
of a bigger story.
Sūtra means thread, and its root means to sew. Each sūtra is a
short aphorism, a thread of
spiritual wisdom that invites commentary, discussion, and weaving.
It’s a concise text that
offers expansive teachings on the nature of the mind, the root of
suffering, and the path to
liberation. It contains the foundations of classical Yoga
philosophy, and remains very relevant
to modern life.
