Many yoga practitioners use asanas to stretch muscles and increase flexibility. In time, this emphasis on stretching can overextend and misshape our musculature, which can create even more imbalance. Instead, the asanas are meant to reveal where our muscles and bones are out of balance. From there, we can learn to anchor & stabilize, or create length & ease, where our body indicates the need. This balancing act takes weight off the spine, which liberates and returns it to its natural curves.
This workshop focuses on activating the lattisimus dorsi to stabilize the sacrum while broadening and lengthening both the lumbar and thoracic portions of the spine.
The intention of this annual urban retreat is to strengthen our capacity physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
Each year a different focus is explored across the five days. Past topics included: strengthening our foundation through subtle energy actions; moving from the four diaphragms; awakening the seven chakras; revealing our deep-rooted patterns. The retreat’s five daily sessions flow from standing poses and twists into inversions, backbends, seated and forward folds. One of the days is dedicated to a silent practice, and each of the five days includes asana, pranayama, pratyahara and meditation. Daily practice such as this brings with it transformational awareness, healing and growth.
