Body Wisdom: Somatic Yoga for Chronic Pain

If you've been in pain for awhile, the chances are good that your doctor or medical team has recommended that you move more. They may have even suggested Yoga. It can be hard to get or stay motivated though, when you are afraid of re-injuring yourself. Or maybe you just don't know where to start.

Yoga combined with somatic movement can offer a great deal to the person in pain. Movement is gentile, but allows the student to challenge themself the right amount. Movment is mindful and above all prioritizes personal awareness and autonomy. Movement is customized moment to moment ensuring confidence but also effectiveness.

If you've been avoiding exercise or movement because you are worried that you might experience a set back or worsening of symptoms, you belong in this series. Mandy is an experienced Yoga teacher and strength and conditioning coach who specializes in working with individuals challenged by chronic pain. She will help you chart a path toward more freedom, better fitness, less fear and greater confidence. Though Mandy works primarilly one on one with her clients, you will receive the same transformative somatic education that her clients do.

This 6 week series will introduce you to the basics of pain science, so you know what is safe for you. Each week you will engage in a practice to develop more comfort and fluency in a specific body area. The final week will feature a practice to show you just how far you have come on the journey and will inspire you to keep going.

This series is perfect for students who can get up and down from the floor. If balance is an issue you may use the wall or a chair. Individual pain conditions will not be addressed, rather, we will explore pain as a whole self phenomenon that we can improve via mindfulness, breath work, feel good movements, community and fun.

Class will meet each Saturday morning at 10:30 am. All props will be provided, though you may feel most comfortable with your own Yoga mat. Practices are perfect for beginners but also for experienced practicioners who enjoy a more elemental and mindful approach.

About the Instructor: Mandy Ryle is an experienced Yoga instructor (E-RYT 500) Certified personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach and certified nutrition coach who provides wellness coaching for people challenged by chronic pain. Her extensive education and work with some of the most prominent pain science educators in North America informs her belief that pain happens in a unified self, not just in a body part. Her approach is to facilitate small learnings that grow into transformation. Mandy is an avid consumer of scientific research and is always learning about the recent data that can help her clients to live more fully, reach for goals, age well and live vibrantly. She is tknown worldwide as the host of The Yin Yoga Podcast and the pioneer of Yin & Somatics style that addresses chronic pain through mindful movement
