Writing Refuge: a writing and yoga workshop with Tamiko Nimura and Erin Joosse
For the Fall 2025 Source Yoga journal, we are inspired by Octavia Raheem, a Black meditation teacher and author of Pause, Rest, Be. Chapter 2 of her book is called “In Destruction, Create Refuge.” Many members of our community are feeling drained and exhausted by world, national, and local affairs. How can we create a space where our community members are reminded by the power of seeking refuge?
Join local writer Tamiko Nimura and studio owner Erin Joosse for an afternoon workshop. Through short writing practices, meditations, and gentle movement, we will reflect on the theme of the next Source Yoga Journal: REFUGE. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring a notebook or journal. Participants will create work that they can share, revise and submit for consideration in the journal’s next issue.

Building a Home Practice Series led by Jeni Martinez
Three Sundays: June 1st-15th, 2025 3:00-4:15pm
Why practice yoga at home? Making the time for a yoga practice means honoring and loving ourselves enough to dedicate time each day to our own well-being. Serving ourselves is a part of serving others. Only when we take care of ourselves can we have more abundant energy to give to others and to our endeavors…In truth, yoga doesn’t ‘take time’- it gives time.” -Ganga White, Yoga Beyond Belief: Insights to Awaken and Deepen Your Practice
This series will get you started or take your home practice to the next level. While not designed to take the place of attending classes with a certified teacher, personal home practice can keep you from missing yoga classes when life gets busy or when you go on vacation.
Home practice can sustain you from one teacher-led class to the next so that you don’t feel as though you are starting over every time you get on your mat. A home practice can also be tailored to support you while you recover from an injury or illness.
Here are a few of the questions we will cover during this series:
*What are the roadblocks to starting a home practice?
*What will I need to get started?
*When is the ideal time to practice?
*How do I assess my own needs?
*How can I create a sequence that leaves me feeling balanced and strong rather than weak and depleted?
*You’ll also learn the pros and cons of listening to intuition vs. following a routine or online class.
*What books should I read to further my practice?
When you practice yoga daily, you will get a glimpse at how yoga can transform your life. You will feel more at home in your body, as well as tapping into the peaceful abiding that is at the core of your being. You’ll be empowered to meet each challenge with grace rather than frustration. You may even find that you have more energy; you are more productive and infinitely more patient. You may also find that the relationships with your children, your partner, your co-workers, your boss and your friends will also improve.
All yoga levels are welcome. Each class will include a short lecture as well as yoga practice. Modifications will be offered when needed. You are welcome to bring your own yoga mat or borrow one from the studio. All other props will be provided.
