In “Yoga for the Back” we will do therapeutic movements and positions for the back and learn good body mechanics for movement of the trunk and spine. All are welcome, but this class is for people who may be experiencing some back discomfort and are looking for natural ways to help themselves. We will be getting up and down off of the floor. We will be working part of the time. If things haven't gone too far downhill, we can show you exercises that most likely will make a positive difference. If the back muscles are not toned it is hard to have a happy back. A weak back is prone to injury. Please get clearance from your doctor.
If you have a herniated or bulging disc this class is not going to change that, but we still want you to come to class. We can show you helpful moves, productive exercises and therapeutic traction.
Flexibility is not necessary for this class, but observation, awareness, sensitivity, care and caution are. If you have a back injury, to come to this class you need to know how to be careful, and please share pertinent information with the instructor.
Note: In our regular classes we are NOT so specifically back oriented. From our regular students we hear very few complaints about their backs, if any.
The class is taught by Mike Curtis, who has been doing yoga for 40 years and loves to help people with their backs.
Qigong (pronounced “chee gung”) is an ancient Chinese method of improving health and enhancing vitality. In this class we will use a variety of gentle exercises to gather, store, cleanse, strengthen and circulate vital energy (Qi). Gentle stretches and strength building movements are part of this practice. Release stress and increase energy as you coordinate breath with movement and intention.
This class meets once a week for 6 weeks.
Join Mianna Morrison on an inward journey that may lead outward, with the support of a gentle drum beat by Mianna, and illustrious singing bowls played by Maria Augustina. Drumming has been used for centuries to help support meditation, expression, healing, and different states of consciousness. A subtle beat was one of, if not the very first, sound and vibration our bodies became accustomed to in our mothers womb. Our system naturally responds to beats, and learning to meditate with a drum beat can help aide and enhance meditation. Reiki will be offered as a supportive energy.
This event will start with a short teaching on the drum, its
history and use, and how to follow it during meditation. Mianna
will then guide some gentle Yoga, and then help you shift into a
quiet space in which they guide you into a position for your body
to begin meditation in. There will be periods of guidance, and
silence. This may lead to a deeply shifted state of consciousness.
Please follow your own inner wisdom on what to do with your body:
you can remain still, dance, or walk around. Mianna asks that you
do not disturb others as you do so. There will be time to journal
and chat for a short time afterward.
We look forward to seeing you!
