While dancing with fabric was really invented by modern European dancers (mostly from France), it has become synonymous with belly dance for its mythological allure.
Veils will be provided during class; if you prefer to buy your own, we have a few beautiful silks for sale so you can take them home to practice. Come to the first class before making any purchases so you can determine what's right for you, or email us ahead of time with questions.
Beginner’s Belly Dance: Tapping Into Roots, Flow, & Flair
(Three Courses for All Levels)
Dive into the beauty and joy of this ancient art form! Our Beginner’s series is designed for you to intuitively tap into the beautiful inner belly dancer that already exists inside of you, just waiting for expression! Get in touch with yourself from the inside-out, exploring your connection with the earth, rhythm, hips, arms, shoulders, feet, and more. This non-judgemental zone helps you become aware of how the isolations of belly dance relate to YOUR body, in your unique way. We dance mostly away from the mirror so you can feel the quality of your movement and fall in love with your body and yourself!
This three-part series can be joined at any time, taken in no particular order. If you miss a class in the series, you may make it up at another class in the same series taught at a different time. The fundamentals of Roots, Flow, and Flair offer a holistic approach to dance - from head to toe, earth to sky, all elements and all chakras. In every series you’ll work on belly dance moves & isolations from hip lifts to undulations, all within the context of the particular theme. Watch yourself become more proficient and connected to your body as you move through the three courses.
Along with technique and personal expansion, you’ll learn about cultural and historical relevance and roots of the dance. Musicality, rhythms, history… we’ll be sure to put what you’re learning into context so you understand the lineage of what you are studying!
Each instructor teaches in their own intuitive way, you’ll gain something different from every class. Once you finish taking all three, you may find you want to take them again, you’ll find an even deeper understanding of all three topics. Together, all three courses give a solid foundation in the essence of belly dance, and prepare you for continuing your belly dance journey in whatever style you feel works for you!
Highly recommended you have a scarf for your hips (with or without jingles, dancer’s choice); some will be for sale in price ranges for everyone.
No experience necessary, all bodies welcome!
Join Johanna in her annual Holiday Lights Candle Dance exploration, all levels welcome!
We honor this time of festivals and holidays, bringing in the sparkling lights to signify our connection with all that is good and healing. Used in spiritual traditions around the world, candles are used to worship, invoke and inspire. Come join us as we dance with joy and hope, feeling lightness in our spirit and grace in our bodies as we move through space with twinkling flames!
We call in traditions from yoga, such as the Dance of Shiva, to guide our movement in the magical path of the infinity sign. Call in the divine of your choosing, celebrate the holiday of any tradition or of none. Each class will be a holiday ritual experience to honor the changing of the seasons and the year. Create your own devoted movement ritual as we use our bodies to to celebrate the wonder of just - being - ourselves! Our last class is just before the Winter Solstice - we will bring light to the darkest time of year in a special celebration.
Balance, coordination, flexbility, improvisation solo and as a group, we will move with intention, power, and beauty through space and time. Moving slowly is often more challenging than moving fast, so we will take time for some deep stretches and breathing to settle into mindful movement. Class will include a short time for meditation to integrate our experience.
Wear what inspires you! ...something comfortable to move in, flowy skirts and costumes are welcome (wear pants underneath so we can stretch without worry). The color themes are blue and white, or, any color that you feel appropriate for your pracice. Bring blue and white ribbons for your wrists (about 3 feet long), and two electric tealights (no active flames please).

Flamenco is a very expressive and mesmerizing dance form, grounded in the richness of bodily expression. This dance has roots in the Folkloric musical tradition of the Roma people of Andalusia, and other parts of Southern Spain. The cultural exchange between the native Spaniards, Moors, and Sephardic Jews all contributed to the forms we dance today.
If you’ve been intrigued by the hypnotic pulse of the Compas, lively music, stomping, and clapping, look no further! This series is welcome to all levels and no experience is required. All you need to bring is a passion for learning, and a pair of Flamenco shoes (character shoes would work as well in this Intro class).
Throughout this series you will become familiar with the basic posture, basic floreos (hand movements), palmas sordas and abiertas, basic braceos (arm movements), ranging from primera to quinta, and simple Golpe (footwork), including plantas and talcon. Other fundamentals covered include pitos (finger snapping), and palmas (hand clapping). Lastly, one of the most critical elements is understanding the rhythms (Compas).
This course provides a thorough introduction into the dance form. However, the Introductory course does not include choreography or performance. Please note that this is a series course and isn’t included in your membership of class package. We also ask that you contact your instructor for details about shoes if you have any questions.
We'll be studying one of the fundamentals of Flamenco, Sevillanas. Whether you've done it before, or are brand new, this class will engage your mind and body, to uplift your spirit!
We look forward to seeing you in class.
All levels welcome!
Class is held at The Centre @ St Pete Beach, 7525 Blind Pass Rd, St Pete Beach
