Phyllanthus emblica is a small deciduous tree native to India. Amla produces small fruits that are bitter, astringent, and sour. The fruits are employed for their beneficial and nutritious qualities. For centuries, amla has been utilized in Ayurveda as a tonic herb and in herbal formulations. The Amla Berry has a brown color with a fibrous inner texture and a characteristic aroma and slight bitter, astringent flavor. Amla is considered a cooling pitta herb. In Hinduism, the amla tree is considered sacred to the goddess Lakshmi.The high tannin content also makes amla an excellent fixative for dyes, leading to its frequent incorporation into inks.
Directions: To prepare as a tea, pour 8 oz of boiling water (212 deg F) over 1-2 tsp. of herb. Cover and steep 5-10 minutes, strain, and serve.
