Widespread throughout the Pacific Northwest, the western red cedar is a large, coniferous tree in the cypress family. Thuja plicata thrives in old-growth forests and along streambanks. Among the Salish, Makah, and Tlingit peoples, Thuja plicata was practically the center of culture and used for everything from clothing to housing.
Western Red Cedar Tips is the natural herb produced from the foliage. It is aromatic and can be used topically, employed as incense, infused, and extracted. The tree’s fragrant, volatile oils were historically used as a bug repellent.Thuja plicata wood is valued in the region of Cascadia for its rot and mold resistance.
Cedar was affectionately nicknamed 'Arbor Vitae', a French term for ‘Tree of Life’, after supposedly curing one of Jacques Cartier's men of scurvy during a 16th century expedition.
