Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar) is a full mind-body-spirit practice. The series of twelve postures stretches and strengthens the entire body while activating the solar plexis (our inner sun). Moving rhythmically with seamless connection to breath establishes a meditative state and a deepened awareness of present moment. You will slip into a state of ease while surrendering to the flow, inhaling and exhaling. Once you get into a rhythm, your mental chatter will slow as your awareness turns inward. This is why it is called a moving meditation. As we flow through one round after another, our collective breath and intention will expand far beyond the walls of the studio. Practicing 108 Sun Salutations is a traditional way to celebrate seasonal changes, while promoting peace, healing, and personal transformation.
Remember – the goal is 108, but always listen to your body. Whether you finish 18, 80, or 108, it is the intent that counts. Make yoga a heart-centred practice, not an ego-based one. If you need to stand in mountain pose for a few rounds or take a a long child’s pose, do what works for you.
