Dancehall is named after Dance halls (or street dances) in
which popular Jamaican recordings were played by local sound
systems. These began in the late 1940s among the people in the
inner city of Kingston (citizens who were not able to participate
in dances in prominent communities AKA Uptown).
Dancehall Dancing is the popular dance genre that sprung
out of the english speaking Caribbean and spearheaded from Jamaica.
It is the mix and coming together of African retention dances
of the region i.e Kumina, Gerreh, Dinki Mini, Quadrille and
Rastafari (nyabingi and skank) just to name a few, that not only
predates Hip-Hop culture but has enjoyed several rounds of
mainstreaming and crossover since the 1960s. Since then we've seen
its evolution and how it has fusioned drawing inspiration from and
to other dance and music genres of today. That could only be
because of what was!
So come!
Join me on the journey of Dancehall, its rich history, the
evolution and meaning behind each groove and their eras over the
