Embodyoga®

Embodyoga® explores traditional Hatha Yoga postures by inquiring into the feeling and movement of life force within our bodies. It is this inner movement that guides our visible outer movements into every yoga posture, breathing practice, and meditation.

Embodyoga instruction brings your awareness into your bodymind, rather than inviting you to picture what you look like from the outside. Classes are rich with exploration of the structures and systems that support all bodily movement and function: muscle and bone, organ, fascia, gland, and more. With this inner awareness as your foundation, you will learn to cultivate deep stability in service of mobility, for a lifetime of safe and satisfying yoga practice.

Our practices can allow the experience of unity to arise within our personal embodied awareness. We begin to experience directly every cell in our body as awake, alive, and self-aware.

Embodyoga was developed by Patty Townsend, and draws deeply from Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen’s work in Body Mind Centering (BMC). BMC is a somatic inquiry-based approach into embodied consciousness, rooted in embryological development, early childhood movement patterns, and self-discovery.

"The mind is like the wind and the body like the sand: if you want to see how the wind is blowing, you can look at the sand."
