Liberation Through Looking occurs when a visual meditation aid is used to reach greater self awareness, or to break our cyclical thoughts. The artwork displayed here may evoke negative emotions; however, within the context of art, we can safely sit and work through them. These pieces are meant to actively work with the the viewer to provoke reflection and empathy. For example, we can extend compassion to the figures in the artwork, and as a result learn to extend compassion back to ourselves. Alternatively, we can look at the fearsome image of Māra and practice being neutral, accepting, and fearless. As we see suffering in the world, it becomes a focal point that can be used as a meditation tool. Although enlightenment is often conceptualized as a singular end goal, it may be more useful to understand that we continually move through varying levels of awareness. The human experience is one in which there is an ever-present potential for clarity, disillusionment, connection, and understanding, which we can choose to recognize at any moment.
