The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrating the lives of those who have passed, along with great color and fanfare to honor (or parody) the silly lives that the rest of us still live! Most well known in contemporary culture for the sugar skulls, there is much more to the celebration.
We at Hip Expressions celebrate in our own way... this choreography is a tribute to this holiday and will be a fusion version of traditional Mexican dance steps and skirt swishing. This will not be performed bare footed, solid shoes/boots recommended.
We will perform this piece at the Saturday, November 5 Showcase,
which is our annual Tribal BURN! show at Sacred Lands. This number
does not involve fire dancing, though there will be other fire (and
non-fire) numbers in the show.
At the show, we also set up an altar with flowers, candles, and skulls; feel free to bring photos of family and friends who have passed so they can enjoy the celebration as well, all are invited!
