Yin yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with postures that are held for longer periods of time. Yin poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body—the tendons, fascia, and ligaments—with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. Yin yoga classes consist mainly of passively held floor postures with a stronger focus on the lower body. The pace of Yin classes are slow and patient. It serves as a perfect counterbalance to the more dynamic/active (yang) styles of yoga we commonly practice. Each posture encourages the safe opening of connective tissues and leaves you with an overall feeling of lightness, spaciousness and peace. The methods of yin will ask practitioners to move to their edges and reach into the soft limits of stretch. A more meditative approach to yoga, yin aims at cultivating awareness of inner silence, and bringing to light a universal, interconnecting quality.
