This is a two-day 16-hour workshop. Students learn to use clinical reasoning based on assessment, and practice applying foundational and advanced clinical massage techniques to a variety of tissue types and conditions.
Day One: The first day covers general concepts and goals in clinical massage, the variety of tissues treated, the science of pain and inflammation, and common injuries and dysfunctions affecting soft tissues. This is followed by an overview and demonstration of the elements of clinical assessment. Students will work with a partner to practice postural assessment, palpation, and range of motion. The principles and methods used in muscle testing will also be presented.
The day continues with foundational myofascial techniques used in clinical massage, such as parallel and transvers gliding, tissue spreading techniques, a variety of compression and friction techniques, and passive myofascial stretching. Students work in partners to practice each technique with anatomical precision and at varying levels of depth.
Day Two: The second day begins with foundational techniques for the lower and upper extremities. This is followed by advanced techniques utilizing a variety of client positions or movements that either shorten, lengthen, or oscillate a body segment to achieve greater effectiveness. Students also learn the rationale and method for performing active assisted stretching as part of a session.
