Bone Health Clinic

This is a pre-registered bi-weekly class for anyone with a diagnosis of osteopenia, osteoporosis or wishing to build bone density. Students have the option of participating in Dr. Loren Fishman's Dose-Response study examining the positive impact of yoga on building bone density. As part of the study, participants are required to sign up for participation with Dr. Fishman and attend the bi-weekly Bone Health Clinic. Bone Health Clinic is limited to 6 participants.
 
Agi Mallory (M.Sc. C-IAYT) is a certified Yoga Therapist and the only Canadian yoga teacher certified to teach Dr. Fishman’s method in Yoga for Osteoporosis. She has been teaching Yoga for Bone Health for three years, and has had a few students report improvements in their Bone Mineral Density (DEXA) over this period. Agi is passionate about teaching yoga, and delighted to support students in Victoria who wish to participate in Dr. Fishman’s Dose-Response Study.

Falling Essentials By Elena Henwood

Falling with Grace: An Introduction to the Feldenkrais MethodTM for Preventing a Fall and Falling with Grace.
 
 
Falling and falling prevention strategies are exceedingly important, acquired with lots of practice and an understanding of how the human skeleton maintains stability under the force of gravity. Using the Feldenkrais MethodTM, participants will learn to balance and coordinate the movements of their skeleton, both for saving themselves from falling and for bringing themselves down to the ground in an organized way*. Getting back up, and shaking off residual stress after taking a fall will also be addressed. During the first 6 hours of this course
 
(Part I), students will learn better balance, better coordination and more control in walking to increase the likelihood of preventing a fall, as well, how to quickly catch themselves from falling under certain circumstances. Students will learn a little bit about the workings of the nervous system as it relates to proprioceptive intelligence and recovering from a fall. The last 3 hours of the course (Part II)**, students will carry out supervised falling practice privately***. Relevant, real-life falling hazards will be identified and incorporated into these lessons.

** Participants are encouraged to register for both Part I and Part II of the course. Participants must complete Part I in order to register for Part II.

Pelvic Health for Women

In this class you will strengthen the Core 4 (pelvic floor, diaphragm, multifidus and transverse abdominals), improve breathing that supports pelvic health, better understand the anatomy of the pelvis including bones, muscles, organs and ligaments and how they connect with the overall body.

You can benefit from this class if you have concerns about pelvic girdle and low back pain (including SI Joint), pelvic floor dysfunction, prolapse or incontinence.
 
No previous yoga experience required.

A therapeutic yoga class addressing overall pelvic health, chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, urinary dysfunction, low back pain and other conditions involving the functions of pelvic organs.

You will:

  • Understand the anatomy and function of the male pelvic floor
  • How to strengthen the core’s inner unit including abdominal, back, hip muscles and their relationship to the diaphragms of the body
  • Learn easy movements to relax the pelvis and relief pain
  • Improve breathing that supports pelvic health
  • Learn self-care approaches that help with incontinence, constipation and urinary dysfunction
  • Get a better understanding about the energetic and emotional aspects related to male pelvic health
  • Understand how to support your rehabilitation after prostate surgery
  •  

We will have a talk of a Pelvic Health Physio Therapist as part of one the sessions.
