Intro to Contemporary: Improv & Expression
Improv is a fundamental pillar of Contemporary dance. In most
classes, there will be an element of improv and the chance for your
creativity to shine through. We take the guess work and
apprehension out of improv. This course explores how emotions,
imagery, impulse, and dynamics can shape movement without needing
“steps first.” Dancers learn structured improv foundations such as
contrast, tension, impulse, texture, character, internal vs.
external focus, and spatial storytelling.
Classes incorporate guided tasks, imagery-based prompts, dynamic
exploration, and short creative exercises, allowing dancers to
build confidence in making their own choices. Instead of copying
movement, dancers learn to generate it. Beginner technical elements
will still be taught through a progressive structure.
Throughout the session, dancers will collaborate to build a short
choreography informed by artistic choices and expressive phrasing,
discovering how personal movements come together to create a shared
piece.
Goal: To build confidence in improvisation and develop expressive tools that bring authenticity to choreography and personal movement.
Who this is good for: Beginners (ages 18+) who want to feel confident in their body and movements while feeling emotionally connected when dancing. Perfect for those who feel shy about improvisation but crave guidance, or for dancers who love storytelling, creativity, or character work.
