Kashi Atlanta Kirtan Circle

Kashi Atlanta's monthly Kirtan Circle is appropriate to all levels of experience, and is a safe space to sing, chant and learn. A Kashi Atlanta kirtan wallah (singer) will start the circle with chants from the Kashi kirtan lineage. Interested participants can try out playing instruments such as the harmonium, bell and drum, or play their own instrument of choice, and play with leading the group. This is a no-stress, fun, heart-opening bhakti spiritual practice.

Kirtan combines mantra and music in a powerful, heart-opening practice that eases the mind and lifts the spirits. Kirtan (and mantra) work with the power of Sanskrit (Naad Yoga, the yoga of sound), tapping into the spiritual energy that surrounds and permeates everything within and around us.

The Radiant Child Yoga Program allows children to get in touch with themselves through the use of postures and meditation. It gives children an operating manual for their little bodies to develop themselves to their full potential — physically, mentally and spiritually. The essence of yoga is presented in a way which reaches children at their level and engages them to great heights. The Grateful Monkey: The Essence of Kali Natha Yoga In 2011, Ganga Devi wrote Ma and asked her which of all the Kali Natha Yoga asanas carried the essence of her yogic teachings. Ma wrote back to say, “The Grateful Monkey is the asana that holds and embodies the totality of Kali Natha Yoga.” Ma continued, offering that The Grateful Monkey sequence “expands the heart to feel gratitude”. At times playful and vigorous, at others heart-opening and full of devotion, The Grateful Monkey sequence honors the God, Hanuman, an avatar of Shiva manifested in monkey form to teach others about humility and devotion. Hanuman is the main character featured in a range of sacred texts, folk tales and even contemporary Indian pop culture, and we’ll explore stories of his endearingly sweet, superheroic self as we practice. An evening filled with a little playful, laughter-inducing yoga and the chance to learn and receive lots of Thai yoga massage to melt away tension. This is all about getting quality time with your bestie or your beloved.

In this workshop, you will be guided through a short practice of partner-assisted asanas (poses) then we’ll move into giving and receiving Thai yoga massage techniques. This practice is all about creating bliss, cultivating connection, trust and deeper awareness of yourself and your yoga partner. It is a practice to directly experience the root principle of yoga: union. Partner yoga promotes laughter and creativity, concentration and balance, as well as relaxation and rejuvenation.

Thai yoga massage is a unique form of yoga therapy which combines stretching, compression massage, manipulation of acupressure points, Thai yoga postures, energy work, and meditation. In this workshop, you will experience it as a practice shared by two people who alternate between the roles of being the “giver” and the “receiver”. This healing modality addresses muscular tension and limited range of motion, allowing you to experience yoga postures in a whole new way, challenges with circulation and the lymphatic system, and helps the release of emotional and mental stress.

Come with a yoga partner, whether that’s a significant other or a friend, and don’t forget to wear loose-fitting clothes. It’s advised to finish eating at least 90 minutes before starting the workshop. This workshop is not advised for those with injuries.

Appropriate for all levels of yoga students.

Reach for the Light: 108 Sun Salutations

108 is an auspicious number: the yogis taught that there are 108 names of of the Divine Mother, 108 sacred sites in India, 108 vital points on the body...Even the cosmos are a part of the sacred equation, as the average distance from both the sun and the moon to earth is 108 times their respective diameters. This is part of why the malas we use for mantra and meditation are made of 108 beads. To celebrate the light of the upcoming summer solstice, we’ll salute the sun 108 times, performing a full yoga mala. These malas are often practiced in conjunction with seasonal shifts or significant occasions, and we’ll use our Sun Salutation practice to honor the abundant light of the season and the light we share, the rhythms of the earth, and the currents of the universe - just like the ancient yogis before us. And just like the fine deity Hanuman that our Swami has been teaching us about, we’ll reach for the sun to affirm our playfulness, curiosity and devotion. Hanuman! It’s all about heart-opening: tearing open our own chest and choosing love as a wildly radical and spiritual act.

Maybe it also has us feeling a little bit vulnerable.

This “open page” writing session is an invitation – to explore both the heart-opening and the emotions that result when we dive deep. We’ll consider different ways of looking at the theme of vulnerability, with stories, poems, images and objects that will serve as writing prompts. We’ll also discuss some ways that our yoga practice can inspire written expression. Then we’ll write in silence, taking one prompt at a time, and taking a break to pause and consider what’s emerged before starting the cycle again.

This is not a writing workshop. It’s grounded in the belief that everyone who wants to write is a writer. Sharing is optional, and we will not be critiquing each other’s work. We’ll leave our critics – inner and outer – at the door.

A chance for connection along the spiritual path.

Yoga, in both its deepest and broadest essences, is the actuality of movement from the illusion of separation into the reality of connection and wholeness. It is both journey and destination.

For many of us, we get to live moments of wholeness while on the mat or meditation cushion, but translating that ‘being-ness’ into the process of our day-to-day lives can leave us feeling anything but whole. These monthly group opportunities are a time to connect with others navigating a spiritual path that wends through a greater world. Swami Jaya Devi recently taught of the importance of owning and embracing all of life - our circumstances, choices and experiences; both our highs and our lows - as our path. The meetings are intended to support us as we work to honor all of our life as our path and use it all as fuel for our spiritual growth.

After a brief opening meditation, each group gathering will begin with an opportunity for each member to share, without ‘cross-talk’, whatever feels particularly present for them in the process of their spiritual growth or the integration of their spiritual work into their life, as a whole. Once everyone has had a chance to share, the remaining time will allow for a more interactive experience. We will close the space with another brief meditation.

The monthly gatherings are facilitated by a long-time resident and monk in our Kashi lineage, who will help hold a safe container for participants’ experiences and may share from teachings they’ve been fortunate to have received along their own path thus far.

A chance for connection along the spiritual path.

Yoga, in both its deepest and broadest essences, is the actuality of movement from the illusion of separation into the reality of connection and wholeness. It is both journey and destination.

For many of us, we get to live moments of wholeness while on the mat or meditation cushion, but translating that ‘being-ness’ into the process of our day-to-day lives can leave us feeling anything but whole. These monthly group opportunities are a time to connect with others navigating a spiritual path that wends through a greater world. Swami Jaya Devi recently taught of the importance of owning and embracing all of life - our circumstances, choices and experiences; both our highs and our lows - as our path. The meetings are intended to support us as we work to honor all of our life as our path and use it all as fuel for our spiritual growth.

After a brief opening meditation, each group gathering will begin with an opportunity for each member to share, without ‘cross-talk’, whatever feels particularly present for them in the process of their spiritual growth or the integration of their spiritual work into their life, as a whole. Once everyone has had a chance to share, the remaining time will allow for a more interactive experience. We will close the space with another brief meditation.

The monthly gatherings are facilitated by a long-time resident and monk in our Kashi lineage, who will help hold a safe container for participants’ experiences and may share from teachings they’ve been fortunate to have received along their own path thus far.

Accepting You in Yoga

Self-acceptance can be challenging for those of us who struggle with our sense of self. We may feel disconnected from our body, not like the way it looks, or feel discomfort with it. Chronic pain in the body may also be involved. Going to a yoga class in and of itself can bring up any of these issues.

In this workshop, we will create a safe space to explore ways of accepting the body. We will use yoga, breathing exercises and guided meditation to find body acceptance. We will also explore the connections between the mind, body and spirit, as yoga is a unique spiritual practice that relies on moving and using the body. The goal will be to find ways of befriending the body and cultivating acceptance of the gift that the body is.

Sequencing an intelligent, hear-centered and memorable yoga class takes both skill and imagination. Join Maha Devi for this two-part playful deep dive into cultivating awesome arrangements for your classes. We’ll deconstruct poses to inform optimal sequencing, delve into drawing inspiration, like any artist, from everything we see and experience, explore how to keep our classes fresh by theming our practices and finding our personal style and voice. To complete each session, we’ll put our wisdom to work and compose a sequence that we’ll experience together.
