Rooted in the time-honored techniques of Traditional Okinawan Karate, our program teaches powerful, natural body movements that develop real-world self-protection skills and lasting inner strength. This is more than punches and kicks — it’s about moving the way your body was designed to move, improving coordination, balance, and control while building confidence from the inside out.
At RVA Shidokan, inclusion and cooperation are at the heart of everything we do. We train together, support one another, and grow as a community. Every class is designed to be safe, respectful, and motivating — a place where beginners feel welcome, experienced students stay challenged, and everyone is encouraged to reach their personal best.
No matter your age or starting point, you’ll leave each session feeling stronger, more focused, and more capable than when you walked in — empowered not just by what you’ve learned, but by the community training alongside you.
This special class will be lead by Sensei Roberto Curtis, 9th Dan in Shidokan Karate with more than 50 years of experience. More information on Sensei Roberto can be found here:

A Restful Half-Day to Sense What Matters and Shape
What’s Next
with Sarah Fischer and Mare
Grinnan
This half-day is a chance to slow down and get out of your own way for a few hours.
We’ll spend the afternoon moving gently, sitting quietly, and working with images, words, and color to see what wants your attention right now. There’s no pressure to figure anything out or make big declarations. The focus is on noticing what feels true and letting that guide what you create.
We’ll begin with simple movement to shake loose some of the mental and physical clutter we carry without realizing it. From there, we’ll move into guided meditation and intuitive visioning. Parts of the process will be held in silence, with a live sound bath woven in to support focus, creativity, and ease.
After a break for tea and snacks, we’ll come back together. Sarah and Mare will share how they’ve worked with vision boards over time, then you’ll continue shaping your own visual map. There will be time to exchange reflections with a partner and a closing group share, for anyone who wants it.
You’ll leave with something real in your hands and a clearer sense of what matters now. It's not a plan you need to follow, it's a reminder of where you are already headed.

Into Stillness workshops present body awareness and flexibility processes that foster greater body-mind-soul communication through meditation, imagination, and a series of quiet, gentle movements. These movements are designed to strengthen your perception of your body’s natural movement that is fluid, easeful, and free of tension and pain. Over the course of the workshop, you’ll move more and more into a state of profound stillness — a stillness formed out of deep communion with your body, where ease and grace arise.
Based on the Bones for Life® program of Ruthy Alon and the Feldenkrais Method® of Moshé Feldenkrais, a foundational goal of our work is to promote an easeful state of being by developing an ever-growing understanding of how your body moves naturally.
Our physical forms are designed to move in graceful arcs, circles, and spirals that work best when the entire body participates. When parts of ourselves are prevented from participating in movement due to trauma, pain, tension, or habits, the entire movement is affected, which can in turn exacerbate pain and tension.
As you go through these gentle, guided movements, you will come to recognize where you are holding and how to let more of you participate in each movement, thereby releasing your body’s tension and pain, and activating its full potential for joyful movement. As the process continues, simple movements are combined to form larger, more complex movements, each step carrying forward your awareness of how to make the movement simpler and easier by including more of you.
The workshops are 3 hours long and generally include a series of floor processes that lead you through natural movements designed to develop an internal perception of how the body works organically from deep within rather than being imposed on the body by our mental ideas of how the body should work. Over time, these experiences build a different sense of the internal organization of natural movement, creating greater ease, flexibility, and well-being.
Into Stillness workshops are open to anyone, at all levels. Most often, you will be lying on a mat on the floor on your back, but sometimes on your side or sitting. Please dress in comfortable, loose clothing. Make sure to bring your curiosity about the deep rewards of intentional, mindful body awareness.
3-hour workshop $75 (Unlimited SoulShine members get a $5 discount with code UNLIMITED)
