The Art of Assisting
Mar 28, 2026 - Mar 29, 2026

Saturday, March 28-Sunday, March 29

with Heather Hested

Noon-3:00 pm both days

$150

As teachers, our job is to provide a safe container for our students to explore asana shapes and find themselves within the practice. While our vocal cues can be wonderful invitations, sometimes a gentle touch (with consent!) can help a student bring attention to a particular area to soften or engage. This can help the student to increase their proprioception and interoception, which in turn can greatly enhance their overall experience of the practice and even help prevent injury.

This immersive workshop experience is not about physically manipulating students into impossible shapes or to make them “go deeper”, but rather to learn the appropriate ways of touch in specific asana shapes to help students create a greater overall awareness of what their body is doing and where it is going.

You will learn how to:

  • Ensure you are getting clear and explicit consent before touch
  • Initiate the foundational skill of “reading” bodies
  • How to effectively use your vocal cues first
  • How to use passive assists that are corrective, supportive, and directional for a wide range of poses.
  • How to use a mindful and skillful touch appropriately in different asana for different effects

There are numerous studies that have shown practicing yoga during pregnancy can be extremely beneficial to maintain strength and peace of mind, and to help prepare for labor and delivery. Many poses are safe and beneficial during pregnancy, but modifications and adaptations will be needed as the body changes with the progression of the pregnancy. Knowing how to help your students adapt their practice throughout their pregnancy, and during postpartum is key for their health and well-being during this changing time.

Learn:

  • How to adapt asana for pre and postnatal students using the support of props
  • The contraindications of various asana and pranayama, and how to offer appropriate alternatives
  • What discomforts and symptoms pregnant students may be experiencing during each trimester, including postnatal
  • The anatomical and physiological changes that occur during each trimester, including postnatal
  • How a prenatal class sequence differs from a regular class sequence
  • Appropriate etiquette when asking questions, and how to hold space for this transformational time in a birthing person's life
