Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class is a challenging series of 26 yoga postures (asanas) with 2 breathing exercises (pranayama) suitable for students of all ages and ability levels. Each class is 90 minutes and systematically works through every part of the body. Indeed, each posture stretches and strengthens the specific muscles, ligaments, and joints needed for the following one.
The twists, compressions, and extensions that result from each posture stimulate the organs, glands, and nerves by moving highly oxygenated blood throughout the body. This 90-minute workout balances and strengthens all systems in the body, resulting in fewer injuries and illnesses, less stress, improved concentration, and feelings of radiant good health.
Bikram Choudhury created this series of 26 postures with 2 breathing exercises. He began practicing yoga at the age of four with Bishnu Ghosh, the brother of Paramahansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi. At age 17, Bikram injured his knee so severely in a weight lifting accident that doctors predicted he would never walk again. Bikram, however, refused to accept this diagnosis and immediately began practicing yoga with his guru to heal his knee. Within 6 months, he had fully recovered, and it was from this experience of the incredible therapeutic powers of yoga that Bikram's Beginning Yoga Series was born.
