Lydia Laurrain Escobedo started dancing in a ballet studio at the age of 5 and grew up dancing tap, jazz, and ballet. She fell in love with teaching when she first started teaching dance at her childhood studio at the age of 16. During college at the University of GA she received a minor in dance education and was introduced to modern dance for the first time. Upon graduating, she went to her first Rueda salsa class with her mom and became a Rueda teacher in Athens and Atlanta. Lydia also discovered On1 Salsa in Atlanta and danced with several Atlanta latin dance companies but found her home with Jimmy Rumba Latin Dance company where she danced for 7 years. She later co-directed the Jimmy Rumba semi-pro team for two years and was fortunate to travel around the country teaching and performing with some amazing salsa founders including Abel Pena, Jimmy Rumba and Al Espinoza-Liquid Silver. Throughout the years she has taught ballet, creative movement, tap and jazz to all ages but feels most connected to the latin styles. After a long hiatus and focus on family, she is ready to jump into the dance world again and is excited to grow and learn with the dancers and staff at Uphora.
