How long have you been playing piano, and what level of RCM have you achieved? I have been playing piano for 10 years and have equivalencies to RCM ARCT from my studies in college and university. In addition to piano, I studied classical voice for 4 years, and some contemporary voice. What method do you prefer to teach in, if any? While I have traditionally used the Alfred series for beginners, I am also flexible with other methods books like the Faber Piano Adventures series. In addition to these, I believe in a flexible approach in finding music that suits the needs and individual styles for each student. What ages and levels do you enjoy teaching the most?I enjoy working with people from all age groups and believe in an individually catered approach. While I can teach to the early advanced level (RCM 8), I have mostly worked with beginner and intermediate level students. What is something creative you do in lessons that is unique to you?I like to bring personalization into the pieces students are working on but also have them learn a little about the composers. For example, we could try to find ways to relate to the composer and what they were trying to achieve in the piece. What was happening in the composer’s life when the piece was written? Another approach I believe in is to use our voices to sing the melodies, which helps bring the music to life and make it organic, as helps us to translate that sound to the piano.Three words that your students would describe you as. My students would describe me as patient, enthusiastic, goal-oriented.
